I started this list of music for coding in June of 2013, so I figured I should honor those that I listened to most that year and then put in my top 10 for midway through 2015. Here lie the first 7 of the 15.
Thomas Was Alone OST – David Housden
I never played this game, but heard it was quite the hit. If the game is anything like the soundtrack, then it’s an up and down somber ride. No lyrics, great background tunage. “Alone Again” is the top track for me here.
Mad Max: Fury Road – Tom Holkenborg (Junkie XL)
Cars, explosions, feminist propoganda (I’m saying that sarcastically, but some people were flaming about it) and guns. Great movie, great soundtrack. The doof warrior will win your heart and makes an appearance on the “main” track “Brothers In Arms.”

Death Certificate – Ice Cube
Not for the faint of heart, this is a classic Ice Cube album with all the misogyny, clever lyrics and truth that the West Coast rap scene is known for. Some great beats and samples of classic funk tracks. Laugh value, “Givin’ Up the Nappy Dug Out” gets the prize and smooth bass tracks “Color Blind” takes the cake.
The Music of Grand Theft Auto V – Various Artists
Featuring a single from Tyler, The Creator, a “Bring the Noise” tribute from Gangrene and an iconic Los Santos track from Oh No, this was on repeat for weeks and weeks.
Strangers to Ourselves – Modest Mouse
A bit different from their other albums, Strangers to Ourselves is a frenetically paced trip through several different genres. It’s like they couldn’t decide on one direction, so they went with several and it somehow worked out. “Ansel” is the top track for me, even though it’s about losing a brother while in Mexico in an avalanche (true story).
Gone Girl OST – Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross
Another hit from these gentlemen. Much creepier than the previous two, but very fitting for the movie itself. Best for listening when you’re working and are a bit aggitated. Careful if you’re listening to “At Risk” late at night. It gets pretty loud.
The Pirates of Penzance – Kevin Kline, Linda Rondstadt, others
Everyone gets on about “I am the Very Model of A Modern Major General” but from the time I was a young boy “When the Foeman Bares His Steel” still ranks as the top song. More on pirates later.
So that wraps up the first 7 of 15(ish) of the top albums I’ve been listening to while I code over the last 2 years. I’m always looking for new music, so toss your suggestions in the comments below.
